Local Area Information - Exeter Exeter is a county town, district and city on the River Exe in Devon, south west of Bristol and north east of Plymouth. The city has been in existence since time immemorial, and was Britain's most south westerly fortified Roman settlement. The Anglican Exeter Cathedral was established in 1050, and other notable buildings in the city include the ruined Rougemont Castle, constructed shortly after the Norman Conquest, the Guildhall, which is the most venerable municipal venue in England that is still being used, the Butts Ferry, a very old cable ferry that crosses the River Exe, and numerous medieval churches.
